Originally trained as a medical doctor (University of Alberta, Class of 1992), upon graduation Greg teamed up with some classmates (Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip) and started the video game developer BioWare while working as a family physician in the mid 1990’s. BioWare went on to become one of the most celebrated video game developers in the world and sold to video game behemoth Electronic Arts in 2007. Greg and Ray retired from video games in 2012. They received the Game Developer’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and joined the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame in recognition of their impact on the video game industry.

While searching for his next venture Greg discovered beer, and started a web show called The Beer Diaries. The Beer Diaries filmed more than 30 detailed interviews with brewers in Texas and Colorado, and now appears on KLRU public television in Austin. During the course of filming The Beer Diaries Greg got the brewing bug and decided to build a brewery in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. As with many of his projects, Greg’s original vision expanded to more than originally planned, and he started a land development business focused on urban renewal. He and his team created the Ritchie Market, a new shared space in the Edmonton neighborhood of Ritchie, that includes Transcend Coffee’s roastery and cafe, local butcher Acme Meat Market, Creekside Cyclery, his brewery, the Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company, and his restaurant, Biera. He has two more properties currently under development.

In addition to a role in operating his current businesses Greg sits on a variety of boards, advises entrepreneurs, pursues philanthropic projects via the Blind Enthusiasm Group.

Originally trained as a medical doctor, Dr. Ray Muzyka co-founded BioWare (www.bioware.com), a video game development studio focusing on story and character, in the early 1990s.  He practiced Emergency/Family Medicine for two years full time, with medicine transitioning to part-time over the following decade as he focused on his role as BioWare's CEO. BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2007 and Ray took on the roles of Senior Vice President at Electronic Arts and General Manager of EA’s BioWare division, which grew over the next five years to span eight development locations worldwide with ~2000 staff (1400 full time).

He retired from video games in October 2012, with his third 'career chapter' at ThresholdImpact (www.thresholdimpact.com) focused on sustainable, profitable impact investing - mentoring and angel investing in information technology, new media and medical innovations with social entrepreneurs. He is an active angel investor and entrepreneurial mentor.

Dr. Muzyka is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), the A100, and the Ashoka Support Network. He is a member of the Alberta Premier’s Advisory Committee on the Economy and serves on a number of private company boards. He previously served on the Board of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences from 2001-2008 and was on the Board of Trustees of the Stollery Children’s Health Foundation from 2012-2015.

What I say

That which is written above is nice. It's true, however, it isn't real. Bios tend to showcase the high points, the awards and accomplishment. They're like dessert, but made only with toppings. They're the whipped cream, chocolate shavings and drizzled caramel. They don't give you the rest. The grinding, struggle, adversity and occasional failure. I've seen maybe 1,000 deals over the past decade and have seen a pattern of mistakes that many entrepreneurs make that keep them unfunded. That gives me something to say. Am I special? No. Have I been involved in a lot of early stage companies? Yes. Did I get it right every time I tried a venture or made an investment? You've got to be kidding. I've had my share of entrepreneurial exploits. Some of it was incredible, some of it was really terrible. The point is, I'm just a guy that loves entrepreneurs and wants them to do well. An astonishing number of companies fail. If you need to know how to increase your chances of success, today’s talk just might help you.
